4 Questions to Ask Before Hiring Private Armed Security
Having private armed security on your premises can bring real peace of mind, but only if you can trust your security service. At GoJoe Patrol, all our armed patrol officers go through extensive vetting and training, so we can always return the right answers to these questions you should be asking before you hire any armed patrols.
Would Unarmed Guards Be Better?
You might not have even thought to ask this question, but it’s a good one. Armed officers are not, per se, better than unarmed officers: they’re just different.
Not every situation calls for armed security. In some cases, armed security can even be overkill that wastes your money or keeps away customers or clients who are uncomfortable around guns. A great company will evaluate what’s best for you, not what it thinks you want to hear or what’s best for its own bottom line.
Will You Do a Threat Assessment?
The security company you approach can’t tell you whether armed or unarmed security would be better if they haven’t done a proper threat assessment. Every situation is unique, and a company that offers cookie-cutter solutions isn’t going to deliver what you really need.
What Kind of Training Do Your Guards Undergo?
Once you determine that armed patrol officers are best, make sure the security company you’re contracting with fulfills all state requirements both for general security and firearms training. And remember that this kind of training isn’t a one-and-done type of thing. It needs to be ongoing so that guards keep their skills sharp.
Do You Vet and Monitor Your People?
Be sure your security company is carefully vetting anyone who will have access to a gun on the job. Ask for specifics about how the company evaluates candidates for armed positions, and then ask about ongoing monitoring. A security company should regularly evaluate employee performance so good people get better and anyone who might have seemed good, but proves to be unsuited to security work, is weeded out quickly.
Ask for Specific Examples
Ask the security company you’re hiring to provide specific examples of times their armed patrol officers responded in threatening situations, successfully defused a tense situation, or actually had to pull their guns. If the company can’t tell you specifics, they likely don’t have enough experience to be worth hiring.
