What Are the Physical Requirements for Becoming a Security Guard?

|

If you’re interested in working as a security guard, you’ll need to be able to meet certain physical requirements in addition to meeting some legal requirements. Security duties call for a level of physical fitness that exceeds that of most jobs. Nevertheless, they’re not impossible to attain with some effort and a good exercise routine. At GoJoe Patrol, we strive to hire great patrol officers. Here are some of the standards we look for.

A typical day as a security guard calls for a lot of walking and watching. Therefore, you’ll need to be able to stay on your feet for hours at a time and have good vision, with or without corrective lenses. However, on a particularly active day, you might have to do a lot more. For example, if you’re handling on-site security and you spot an intruder, you may have to give chase or attempt to detain the person.

When it comes to physical strength, expect to have to lift 10-pound loads on a regular basis. You may need to lift up to 25 pounds from time to time. Commercial security jobs may call for more frequent lifting if you’re helping the company move valuables. Being able to handle more is a big plus. In an emergency, a person could be trapped or a door could get stuck. Extra strength is always useful when working as a security guard.

Additional Physical Requirements to Obtain a Security Officer License

Besides the requirements that we look for, Washington State also has some physical requirements related to licensing. If you want to be a security officer, you will legally be required to get a license. If you don’t already have one, we’re willing to help you! Part of licensing involves proving knowledge of emergency response protocols. For example, fire safety and emergency first aid knowledge are part of the licensing procedure.

Performing CPR or using a fire extinguisher implies a certain level of physical fitness. Keep that in mind when pursuing your license.

Do I Need to Pass a Firearms Test to Become a Security Guard?

A firearms license is not a requirement unless you’re specifically interested in working as an armed security guard. Armed guards can take on a wider variety of jobs at GoJoe, but we also hire people to work as unarmed security guards.

The Ideal Profile for Security Guards at GoJoe Patrol

Although physical requirements are important for patrol officers, mental requirements matter just as much. We aim to secure communities with local guards who care about the people around them. Professionalism and a calm, collected nature are also vital for success as a guard. Strength is just as important as knowing when to use it.
