Each state determines, by law, the steps necessary to become a security professional. Currently, GoJoe Patrol offers security services in Washington and Idaho. Here are the requirements for private armed and unarmed security officers in these states.
Idaho
Unarmed Security Officer: To apply for an unarmed security officer position in Idaho, you must be at least 18 years old and possess a high school diploma or the equivalent. In addition, you cannot have a criminal record involving illegal weapon use or any prior felony convictions.
Armed Security Officer: Private armed security officers must meet more stringent requirements than unarmed guards, as they not only have greater responsibilities but also pose a greater liability risk due to carrying a firearm. To be a private armed officer in Idaho, you must be at least 21 years old, have a high school diploma or equivalent, and have an Idaho driver’s license. You will also need to pass a background test and a drug test.
Additionally, you must have worked as an unarmed officer for at least one year, display ethical behavior, and be physically capable of performing the job requirements. The county you will be working in will determine the type of firearms training you must complete.
Washington
Unarmed Security Officer: To become an unarmed security professional in Washington, you must be at least 18 years old, have a high school diploma or the equivalent, be an American citizen or resident alien, and submit to fingerprinting and a background check. Additionally, you will need to be employed by a security company or have an employment offer from a licensed security company in the State of Washington, and complete their pre-training requirements.
Pre-training requirements, at this time, include training on:
- Accident prevention
- Emergency response
- General first aid
- Incident reporting
- Legal limitations and power
- Safety protocols
- Security principles
- Surveillance documentation and operation
Finally, you cannot have any criminal convictions related to your ability to perform the job. The Washington State Department of Licensing also charges a licensing fee, which is currently $111.
Armed Security Officer: If you want to work as a private armed security officer in Washington, you must be at least 21 years old and already possess a license as an unarmed security officer. Also, you cannot have had any felony convictions in the last ten years or committed any fraudulent acts.
In addition, you must have a job or job offer with a licensed private security company, hold a Washington driver’s license, and submit to fingerprinting and drug testing. You will also need to have a current commission-issued firearms certificate.
